Random Facts About Palm Springs

In the 1980s, Palm Springs was a backwater, equal parts artist colony and retirement community for the damned. The arid desert climate, near-year-round sunshine and desert-modern lifestyle attracted many Hollywood stars. Early adopters included Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Marlene Dietrich, Ginger Rogers and Joan Crawford.

The town has some strange attractions, including the Volkswagen Spider Sculpture. This giant metal spider is shaped like a VW beetle and stands in a private compound. It was built by Robert Miner, who ran the Hole in the Wall Welding Shop. You can take a tour of the sculpture in about two hours.

The city is a great place for outdoor recreation. Its proximity to mountains and canyons means that you won’t run out of options for adventure.
