Palm Springs is a desert resort city located in California. In the 1930s, Hollywood stars flocked to this desert oasis to get away from the glare of celebrity gossip. In the days of the Great Depression, celebrities were constantly under surveillance. Rumors of extramarital affairs or even homosexuality could put them in the rags. These stories were widely circulated and were fueled by gossip columns with a worldwide readership.
Trina Turk, a Los Angeles-based designer, has a presence in Palm Springs, where she offers her signature patterns on men’s and women’s clothing. Her boutique also offers gifts and housewares. The building itself is a Palm Springs landmark, and designed by desert modernist Albert Frey in 1962. Inside, you’ll find three connected boutiques and plenty of strong prints.
The city is known for its colorful art scene. From the colorful Saguaro Hotel to the colorful doors and walls in residential neighborhoods, Palm Springs has a wide array of art to explore. The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission has launched a mural project that invites local artists to paint the walls with their works.
