The first official mention of Palm Springs dates back to 1823, when Mexico broke away from Spain. The city was known as Alta California, and in 1823, Mexican diarist Jose Maria Estudillo and Mexican Brevet Captain Jose Romero were sent to the region to record the presence of “Agua Caliente” (Agua of the Water). The area is located in southern California, and is surrounded by the San Jacinto Mountains on the west.
